12/18/09 - Scenar Therapy
Scenar Therapy for Pain Relief Now Available at the
Miami Center for Holistic Healing
In November, Nancy Eklund M.D. and Luis Tellez, L.M.T. completed 24 hours of training on the newly purchased Scenar hand held device. Scenar incorporates leading edge Russian technology and is used by trained practitioners to alleviate pain and restore function. It has been widely used in Russia, Europe and Australia for many years.
Luis charges $80 per one hour session with discounts available for multiple sessions.

10/15/09 - Telomere Testing
Telomere Testing Now Available
On October 7, 2009 three American scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for discovering how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.
Telomeres are sections of genetic material at the end of each chromosome whose primary function is to prevent chromosomal “fraying” when a cell replicates. As cells age, its telomeres become shorter.
The new test, performed by Spectracell Laboratories in Houston, measures telomere length and compares that number with the population average for a given age. Having a telomere length longer than the population/age average is desirable.
A relatively short telomere length has a statistically significant correlation with the risk of cardiovascular disease. There are many factors which are known to negatively impact telomere length, including a diet which increases oxidative stress (refined carbohydrates, processed foods, trans fats). There are also strategies which may preserve telomere length.
On an individualized basis, Dr. Eklund will work with patients to monitor how their treatment plans affect telomere shortening.
08/19/2009 - H1N1 Flu Protection
H1N1 Flu Protection
Now that school is back in session, have you been wondering if there is anything you can do to protect you and your family against the H1N1 virus? Of course you should wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, and stay away from work or school if you have flu symptoms such as fever with cough or body aches. Regular flu vaccine should be available soon; H1N1 vaccine will be available later and initially only for certain high risk persons.
The usual medical prevention for the flu includes taking one of two drugs (Tamiflu or Relenza) after a known exposure. Given that it is likely that both may be in short supply in the event of a pandemic or may be of limited value in treating the flu, Dr. Eklund recommends other preventative measures.
Certain natural supplements have anti-viral and anti-flu properties while others can stimulate your body’s own immune system to fight the flu. For H1N1, Dr. Eklund is telling her patients to keep three supplements on hand just in case they become scarce during an epidemic. They are:
- IgG 2000 - containing serum-derived immunoglobulin concentrate which has been shown to enhance the immune function by directly boosting immunoglobulin levels in the GI tract;
- Viragraphis – containing andrographis extract, clinically shown to have anti-viral properties; and
- Immunotix – the purest form of beta glucan available. Its biochemical properties stimulate the proliferation of protective white blood cell production in the bone marrow as well as enhance the body’s immune system in identifying or attacking “foreign invaders” such as viruses.
Recommended dosages are: IgG 2000 - - two capsules, twice a day if you feel sick or feel that you are coming down with the flu; Viragraphis - - up to eight capsules per day if you are ill and lower doses for prevention; and Immunotix - - one twice a day.
All three of these protective supplements are available at Dr. Eklund’s office or by calling Xymogen at (800) 647-6100 and mentioning that Dr. Eklund recommended them.

Radio station: WDNA, 88.9 on the FM dial
When: 11 am, Tuesday, August 28, 2009
Topic: Bio-Identical Hormones
07/31/2009 - Dr. Eklund spent three days in Hollywood. Florida attending a seminar entitled,
“Illuminating the Path Forward: Integrating New Approaches for the Evaluation and Treatment of Mood Disorders”
This was the topic of the 16th International Symposium on Functional Medicine. As the course materials stated, only 1/3 of individuals suffering depression in the US receive treatment and more than half of those patients being treated for depression achieve little or no recovery using conventional pharmaceuticals. In addition, pharmaceutical side effects contribute to poor compliance, often furthering incomplete resolution of symptoms. A myriad of new approaches were discussed.
07/20/2009 - Dr. Eklund just returned from a three day seminar held in Washington DC under the auspices of the Institute for Functional Medicine entitled,
“Restoring Gastrointestinal Equilibrium:
Practical Applications for Understanding, Assessing and Treating Gut Dysfunction.”
Significant information was shared regarding the effects of bacteria in the small intestine; the role of prebiotics and probiotics in sickness and health; irritable bowel syndrome and dysbiosis; constipation; inflammation in the gut; and auto-immune diseases
